Lomawai villagers came to the rescue after the truck fell off the old Lomawai Bridge and sank to the bottom of the river. A 55-year-old driver and his two passengers were saved by the local villagers. The truck was heading the wrong way on the bridge when it slipped. Locals spotted the truck when it fell and one of the boys went to help the men. The two passengers were already out of the vehicle; the 55-year-old man needed help getting out after suffering more injuries than the other two. Witnesses say they were lucky to escape because the a bus full of people was ahead of the truck and the accident could have been much worse.
My thoughts:
When I read this article, I was pleasantly surprised at the reaction of the witnesses. Considering the fact that their first reaction was to rush over and help, it reflects that the people are very connected and do whatever they can to help a brother out. This kind of unity brings a smile to my face knowing how calmly the situation was handled. It forces me to reflect on my own country. If this were to happen in Florida, in Maitland, right now, would bystanders wait for authorities to come? Or would they rush to aid those in danger?
This article ties into the culture of Fiji by proving how united the people are. These villagers were complete strangers to the passengers in danger, yet they did everything they could to help get them out of the vehicle safely. Taking note that the country of Fiji is highly isolated, the brothers and sisters of this country depend on each other in times of need. Although many may view this as a forced reaction, I believe that these citizens truly think of other people, either best friends or complete strangers, as their brothers and sisters.
