Kirk Watson suffers from retinitis pigmentosa but is leading this month's "disAbilities" sailing race. Watson started off racing in his early 20s when his diagnosis was beginning, but continues his love for the sport today at 40 years old and legally blind. Despite his condition, his leadership is inspirational and his determination is admired by his fellow crew members. Though questions arise about his solitude while sailing, Watson stresses that there are a few other members aboard who can help him out. He will primarily fulfill his role as a mainsail trimmer, plus, the extra decision-maker. Watson explains that sailing doesn't just rely on vision, and that feel was a vital aspect of the sport.
My thoughts:
Kirk Watson proves to be a determined leader, athlete and fighter despite his disability. To me, this reveals a glimpse inside the heart and mind of this man. His love for the sport motivates him to overcome any obstacles in the way, and he tackles them with grace and confidence. Watson has been an inspiration to the people around him and gives hope to others with similar situations. His attitude and demeanor reflect the drive and courage it takes to accomplish your wildest dreams. Watson's story has touched me and helps me realize that all athletes have something in common, despite where you are on the globe: determination.
This article ties into the culture of Australia by looking deeper into the heart of a pure athlete. Watson's drive and motivation gives us a sense of the competitiveness throughout the country. The Land Down Under is known worldwide for its cricket, horse-racing, and rugby sports. This country uses these sports as a small part of its national pride. Since Australia looks up to its sports teams with pride, this article shows a man who went above and beyond the athlete expectation and was successful. Although Mr. Watson may not be the perfect sailor, he succeeds at uniting the athletes around Australia for the love of the game.
