WE ARE FIJI
HISTORY
After a century as a British colony, Fiji became dependent in 1970. in 1987, the Democratic government was interrupted by a military overthrow. This was caused because the government appeared to be dominated by the Indian community. A 1990 constitution gave Melanesians the government power which led to the emigration of many Indian people. Very quickly, the Melanesians became the majority. Then, a peaceful election led to an Indo-Fijian leading the government. But groups of citizens formed a coup and lots of political disagreements took place in May 2000. In August 2001, Parliamentary elections selected Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase as the government leader. When Qarase was re-elected in 2006, a military coup led by Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama acted as president but became the interim prime minister. Although Bainimarama refused to hold elections, he promised to hold elections in 2014.
