Lobbyists say the NSW government is supporting the rest of the country when it comes to taking action on alcohol related harm. The state government hit one of the lowest scores in the National Alliance for Action on Alcohol's (NAAA) first score card on alcohol policy. Since recent alcohol-related crime, NSW government is working to prevent and reduce alcohol abuse and harm. Their goal is to strengthen drinking policies after a weekend of violence. In this case, a man was punched and stomped on, while several other men were in separate attacks across Sydney the same day. Opposition leader John Robertson proposed a plan to conquer alcohol-related harm, and considering risk-based license fees for venues.
My reaction is unsurprised. Alcohol abuse is something many countries struggle with, and many are continuously doing all they can to prevent incidents from occurring. I'm pleased with the determination of the government leaders and how they are motivated to change drinking policies. Although drinking should not be completely confiscated, I believe that alcohol reduction and limitations would serve the general population well. It could prevent outbursts, anger, and aggression due to alcohol abuse. I'm glad that people are recognizing the issues that abuse raises, and that their doing their best to put a stop to it.
This article really exposes the pieces of society that political leaders are working to fix. Hearing about the attacks and physical aggression that has risen because of alcohol demands the attention of the leaders in Australia. It forces them to act upon it and find a solution to make their society a better place. The numerous and recent attacks motivated the leaders to change the standards of drinking to keep their citizens safe. This gives us a glimpse into the flaws of the society of Australia, and also gives us a sense of the priorities in political conflicts. It pleases me to hear that the leaders are determined to prevent the abuse, and causes me to wonder if awareness for alcohol abuse was brought to attention simply because the attacks progressed to the worst. If the statistics weren't so high, and the injuries weren't as worse, would the political leaders be as motivated to change the policy?
